Adult Naturalisation

There are different routes to apply. Most adults who have migrated to the UK get citizenship by applying to ‘naturalise’.

To apply for British citizenship, you must meet the following criteria:

  • To have Settle status also known as ILR or PR for 1 year and have resided legally in the country for the last 5 years (3 if married to a British person)

  • Have a level of English B1 (this is not applicable if you have a university degree in the UK)

  •  passed the exam Life in the UK

Note: Exemption for people over 64 years of age for both exams

  • Do not have more than 450 days outside the UK for the last 5 years and 90 days in the last year - (There are exceptions depending on the case)

  • Intending to live in the UK

  • check you’re of ‘good character’ - this means showing you haven't recently broken the law or gone bankrupt

  • give the names and details of 2 people who can help prove your identity - these are called ‘referees’

  • To pay a Naturalization Fee to the Home Office £1349.20 pounds

  • Have the necessary documents to support the form.

  • Attend a Biometrics appointment to have your fingerprint and photo taken

If the application is approved, the client will be invited to an official ceremony (the fee of which is included in the total amount), where he/she will swear allegiance to the Queen and receive his Naturalization Certificate as a British citizen.

The British Passport application is then to be submitted.
